Full Name: Maaza Mengiste

Maaza Mengiste (born 1974) is an Ethiopian-American writer. Her novels include Beneath the Lion’s Gaze (2010), and The Shadow King (2019), which was shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize.

Mengiste was born in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. A Fulbright Scholar and a recipient of an Amerian Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award, she is named one of the Guardian’s Ten Best Contemporary African Books. Her work can be found in the New Yorker, Granta and the New York Times, among other publications. She lives in New York City.
